Education Minister Pokharel calls for continued vigilance to drive reforms

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education, Science and Technology Sasmit Pokharel has urged journalists to remain vigilant and actively contribute to advancing education reforms.

During a meeting with a delegation from the Education Journalists’ Group at his office in Singha Durbar today, the minister sought their support in highlighting both progress and challenges in the education sector, noting that the government has initiated efforts to address existing issues and improve overall performance.

“Journalists covering education should consistently bring forward both positive and negative developments. At times, we may lose direction, and such moments require vigilance. We must also be ready to correct ourselves when needed,” he said.

Pokharel also expressed commitment to reviewing the ‘Communication Strategy for Education, 2065’ as requested by the group and taking steps toward its implementation.

On the occasion, group chair Nirjala Kakshapati submitted a memorandum outlining key recommendations. These included tabling the long-pending School Education Bill in the upcoming budget session with necessary amendments, implementing recommendations of the High-Level National Education Commission (2076), increasing investment in education, operationalizing a communication strategy, and promoting research and fellowship opportunities in education journalism.

The meeting was also attended by former group chairs Prakash Silwal, Sudarshan Sigdel, and Tula Adhikari, among others.
