KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has thanked leaders of the CPN-UML party for their cooperation in conducting the election peacefully, while also urging them not to be discouraged by their defeat.
Prime Minister Karki invited UML leaders to Baluwatar to express her appreciation.
Senior UML leaders including Ishwar Pokhrel, Pradeep Gyawali and Mahesh Bartaula were present during the meeting.
During the interaction, the prime minister praised UML for playing a constructive role in ensuring that the election was completed peacefully despite difficult circumstances.
“The only way to resolve the current difficult situation was through elections. Remembering your responsibility toward the nation, you played a cooperative role and participated actively in the election. I would like to thank you sincerely for that,” Karki said.
She described the election as an important means to address the country’s political challenges and expressed gratitude for the party’s support.
Karki also said that victory and defeat are natural outcomes in a democratic process, adding that a single electoral mandate does not determine the long-term standing of a political party.
Citing political examples from India, she referred to former leaders Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Indira Gandhi, saying that political ups and downs are common.
“An electoral mandate from a single election does not permanently determine the status of political parties. We have seen similar political fluctuations during the times of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Indira Gandhi in India,” she said.
She encouraged UML leaders not to be disheartened by the result and urged them to continue raising issues related to the country and the people.
During the meeting, UML leaders also congratulated the government and the prime minister for successfully conducting the election in a peaceful manner while ensuring broad acceptance from all sides.
They appreciated the administration’s neutrality, the peaceful environment and what they described as a relatively low-cost election process.
Earlier on Sunday, Prime Minister Karki had also visited the residence of UML chair K. P. Sharma Oli in Gundu to offer condolences as he was mourning the death of a parent.
