76 vehicle accidents in Surkhet in one month



KARNALI: A total of 76 vehicle accidents were recorded in Surkhet last month. Four people, including a woman, died in the accidents, according to the District Traffic Police Office, Surkhet.

According to data made public by the office on Monday, human error was the main cause of the accidents. About 80 percent of the accidents occurred due to human error, while the remaining were caused by mechanical malfunction, informed Rohit Kumari Shahi, chief of the District Traffic Police Office, Surkhet.

According to Shahi, the highest number of accidents involved motorcycles (48), followed by tempos (10), minibuses (7), buses (5), jeeps/cars (4), and tractors (2). She said 34 accidents were caused by speeding, while three were due to drunken driving, three due to driver incompetence, one while climbing or descending a slope, and eight due to brake failure.

During the month, traffic and district police conducted 640 checks and took action against 402 violators, collecting Rs 391,500 in revenue, Shahi said. Similarly, the traffic police alone took action against 235 individuals during the checks, collecting Rs 192,500 in revenue.

The office also stated that awareness programs related to traffic rule compliance are being carried out intensively. A total of 18,543 people benefited from the One Minute Driver Program, 6,663 from a pedestrian-targeted program, 516 from an organization-targeted awareness program, 1,754 from a driver-targeted awareness program, and 128 from another driver-targeted program.
