KATHMANDU: Vote counting for the Nepali Congress’s 15th General Convention, held to elect the party’s new leadership, has been completed.
According to Election Committee Member Secretary Raju Katuwal, counting for all positions concluded on Friday morning with the announcement of results from Madhes and Bagmati provinces. The counting process was completed in nearly a week.
Vote counting for central committee members representing workers, martyrs’ families and conflict victims from Lumbini, Gandaki and the Kathmandu Valley had been completed earlier. Similarly, counting for the Khas-Arya and Tharu clusters, including the joint general secretary positions and open and women’s central committee seats, was completed late Thursday night, according to the election committee.
Katuwal said the committee was currently verifying the results for all positions and preparing to publish the final results shortly.
Katuwal said the counting process had been completed much faster than at the party’s 14th General Convention, when it took 12 days to count the votes of 4,700 delegates. This time, votes cast by 7,392 delegates were counted in about a week.
According to him, approximately 25 counting groups worked in shifts throughout the day and night after counting began. He said the voting and counting processes proceeded smoothly, without disputes, in a harmonious atmosphere.
Around 162,000 ballot papers were counted during this convention. Delegates voted using 23 separate ballot papers to elect representatives to a total of 229 positions.
The election committee said certificates would be distributed to the elected office bearers and members, and oath-taking programmes would be organised soon after Dashain.
