Government assures regular supply of sugar and essential goods

KATHMANDU: The government has said it is fully committed to ensuring the regular supply and price stability of essential goods, including sugar, which directly affect daily life.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies Netra Prasad Subedi urged consumers and stakeholders not to hoard sugar and other daily essentials unnecessarily.

The statement comes after India recently revised its policy on sugar exports and imposed restrictions, which has drawn attention from Nepal’s supply authorities.

The ministry said it is prioritizing consumer interests, price stability, and smooth availability of sugar, adding that efforts are underway to ensure uninterrupted supply at affordable prices.

According to the ministry, the current stock available from domestic sugar industries, along with imports held by Food Management and Trading Company and Salt Trading Corporation, is sufficient to meet demand for around eight months.

The ministry further stated that it is strengthening market monitoring, supply management, and coordination among agencies to prevent artificial shortages, black marketing, hoarding, and unjustified price hikes.

It also reiterated its commitment to achieving self-reliance in sugar production by improving competitiveness in the sector.

The government said efforts will be made to enhance productivity through improved sugarcane varieties, innovation, and the use of modern technology, with support to farmers in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.
