Gagan Thapa-led NC central committee to visit Election Commission today



KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress Central Working Committee led by party president Gagan Thapa is scheduled to visit the Election Commission later on Friday amid the party’s intensifying dispute over official recognition.

According to party sources, the entire central committee, including President Thapa, is expected to reach the Election Commission today. The visit follows an earlier appearance at the Commission by the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led faction of the Nepali Congress, which also submitted documents and arguments claiming its legitimacy.

The Deuba-led group, headed by acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka, reached the Election Commission on Friday morning, arguing that the special general convention was not endorsed by the party’s Central Working Committee and that a large number of representatives had withdrawn their signatures.

The Thapa-led leadership is expected to discuss party recognition, election symbols, and other procedural matters related to the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.

With both factions of the Nepali Congress approaching the Election Commission on the same day, pressure has mounted on the constitutional body to deliver a timely decision as the election schedule draws closer.
