MUSTANG: The Gharapjhong Climate Conference 2026 began in Mustang today, with a focus on the growing impacts of climate change and the need for stronger climate action.
Organized by Gharapjhong Rural Municipality, the conference was inaugurated by Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Gita Chaudhary.
Before the inauguration, the chief guest and people’s representatives from all seven provinces and various local levels gathered at the rural municipality office in Jomsom and proceeded to the conference venue in a cultural procession.
According to rural municipality Chairperson Mohan Singh Lalchan, the inaugural session will last around three hours.
A message of best wishes from Prime Minister Balendra Shah was read out during the inaugural session. Local representatives from Mustang are also scheduled to address the gathering on the impacts of climate change in different parts of Nepal.
The conference will bring together representatives to discuss the effects of climate change across the mountain, hill and Terai regions, including the causes of carbon emissions and possible measures to reduce their impacts.
The two-day conference is expected to conclude with the issuance of the “Climate Declaration 2026,” focusing on climate action plans and climate justice.
Participants will discuss future strategies and climate adaptation measures that local governments can adopt to address the climate crisis, which has emerged as a pressing global concern.
The conference will also focus on the growing risks associated with climate change, particularly as rising global temperatures continue to intensify its effects.
Climate change has affected a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, livestock, tourism, education, health, infrastructure and the environment, as well as human lives and physical assets.
The conference will also review the loss of lives and property caused by the Rasuwa floods on August 26.
