MUSTANG: The Gharpajhong Climate Conference 2026 is set to begin in Mustang today. Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Environment Geeta Chaudhary is scheduled to inaugurate the conference.
People’s representatives from 421 local levels and 36 District Coordination Committees arrived in Mustang on Monday evening to attend the conference.
According to Bhim Kumar Basnet, Chief Administrative Officer of Gharpajhong Rural Municipality, more than 2,000 guests, including elected representatives from metropolitan cities, sub-metropolitan cities, municipalities and rural municipalities across all seven provinces, had arrived in Mustang by Monday evening. Accommodation has been arranged for the guests at local hotels.
Village societies, mothers’ groups, youth clubs and other local organizations from all five wards of the rural municipality have been mobilized to help manage the conference, said Jamuna Thakali, vice-chairperson of the rural municipality.
Thakali said mothers’ groups will manage breakfast, lunch and snacks for participants at the conference venue, while dinner and accommodation have been arranged at hotels designated by the rural municipality.
The streets and settlements across all five wards have been decorated with flags and banners showcasing local art and culture to give the conference a festive appearance.
Streetlights have also been installed along major highways and internal roads and illuminated for the occasion. Health workers and volunteers have been mobilized to provide health checkups for visiting guests.
Preparations have been made to ensure uninterrupted drinking water, internet and electricity services. Vehicle parking and traffic management arrangements have also been put in place.
The Jomsom Covered Hall, where the conference will be held, has been decorated with a stage, sound system, banners and other necessary facilities, said Bikash Sajayal, the rural municipality’s information officer.
A 28-foot-high spherical balloon depicting the Earth shedding tears has been installed inside the conference venue to raise public awareness about the impacts of climate change.
Similarly, more than 50 stalls have been set up to promote agricultural products from Mustang, according to Roshan Thakali, agriculture branch officer of the rural municipality. The two-day conference is expected to issue a declaration addressing the impacts of climate change.
