KATHMANDU: Madhesh Province Chief Minister Krishna Prasad Yadav is set to seek a vote of confidence today in the Provincial Assembly.
Chief Minister Yadav will present the motion for a vote of confidence during the Madhesh Province Assembly meeting scheduled for 11:00 am.
He is required to seek a vote of confidence after the Janamat Party, a coalition partner in the Madhesh Province government, withdrew its support.
Earlier, a meeting of the Council of Ministers held at the Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers had decided to table the confidence motion. According to legal provisions, a chief minister must obtain a vote of confidence within 30 days after a supporting party withdraws from the government.
In the 102-member Madhesh Province Assembly, the government requires the support of at least 52 lawmakers to secure a majority. Despite the withdrawal of support by the Janamat Party, the ruling coalition still claims the backing of 63 provincial assembly members.
The current coalition includes 22 lawmakers from the Nepali Congress, 26 from Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal, and 15 from the CPN-UML.
Madhesh Province Assembly Speaker Ram Ashish Yadav said the assembly meeting has been convened this morning for the Chief Minister to seek the vote of confidence.
Meanwhile, internal disputes have surfaced within the Janamat Party following its decision to withdraw support from the provincial government. Although the majority of the party’s nine provincial assembly members withdrew support, two Janamat ministers have continued to remain in office.
Mahesh Prasad Yadav, the party’s parliamentary leader and Minister for Finance, along with Basanta Kushwaha, Minister for Social Welfare and Sports, have not resigned from the government.
