House committee chair elections scheduled for Friday

KATHMANDU: Elections for the chairs of thematic committees under the House of Representatives will be held on April 17.

The Federal Parliament Secretariat has already published the election schedule for the committees, which are often referred to as a mini parliament.

According to the schedule, proposals to elect a committee chair can be registered between 1 pm and 4 pm on Thursday. As per Federal Parliament Secretary Harkaraj Rai, each nomination must be proposed by one committee member and supported by another member of the same committee.

By 4:30 pm the same day, the list of duly registered nominations will be published in order of registration.

On Friday at 1 pm, the respective committee meeting will be held, where the proposer will formally present the nomination, the supporter will endorse it, and the proposal will be put to a vote.

The secretariat has requested that ministers who are members of more than one committee must inform the concerned committee in writing at least 24 hours before the election if a voting situation arises.

There are 10 committees under the House of Representatives, four under the National Assembly, and two joint committees.

The House committees include the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee; Agriculture, Cooperatives and Natural Resources Committee; Infrastructure Development Committee; Women and Social Affairs Committee; State Affairs and Good Governance Committee; Education, Health and Information Technology Committee; Public Accounts Committee; Finance Committee; International Relations and Tourism Committee; and Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Welfare Committee.

The joint committees include the Parliamentary Hearing Committee and the Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of Directive Principles, Policies and Responsibilities of the State.
