NC Central Working Performance Committee meets to review electoral defeat and chart new course

KATHMANDU: The Central Working Performance Committee of the Nepali Congress is meeting today at 2:00 PM at the party’s central office in Sanepa.

While the formal agenda has not been released, party sources indicate that the meeting will focus on the party’s recent performance in the March 5 general elections and the selection of a new leader for the parliamentary party.

This high-level meeting comes at a critical juncture for the country’s oldest democratic party. In the elections held on March 5, the Nepali Congress suffered its worst-ever electoral defeat, winning only 38 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives. Even Party President Gagan Thapa lost his seat in Sarlahi-4, though he remains the party’s head following the special convention held in January.

The committee will discuss the findings of the internal review report on the election results. Initial assessments suggest a massive shift in the youth vote toward the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which secured a historic majority.

With many senior leaders, including President Thapa, losing their parliamentary seats, the party faces a vacuum in the House of Representatives. The committee needs to finalize the process for electing a Parliamentary Party Leader who will serve as the Leader of the Opposition.

There are ongoing debates regarding the timeline for the 15th regular General Convention, currently slated for May 2026, and how to address the legal challenges brought by the rival faction led by former President Sher Bahadur Deuba.

The meeting is also expected to deliberate on the progress of the “Jara Abhiyan” (Root Campaign) and how to mend the widening internal rift that has seen senior leaders like Purna Bahadur Khadka challenge the current leadership’s legitimacy. Acting Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Dulal confirmed that all members and office bearers of the committee have been requested to attend.
