KATHMANDU: Nepali Communist Party leader and Rolpa lawmaker Barsaman Pun has appealed to Nepalis at home and abroad to support people affected by floods and landslides in his home district.
Pun made the appeal through social media after meeting Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen) on Friday.
He announced that he would donate one month’s salary he receives as a member of the House of Representatives to support flood and landslide victims and assist immediate relief and rescue efforts.
Pun said he had already initiated necessary efforts for additional relief for disaster victims and would continue coordinating with concerned authorities to ensure that assistance reaches affected families as soon as possible.
He also urged Nepalis at home and abroad to contribute as much as possible to the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction of families affected by the disasters.
Saying that repeated disasters had plunged the entire Rolpa district into deep grief, Pun paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the floods and landslides and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Pun urged provincial and local governments to prioritize the immediate rescue of flood and landslide victims, provide appropriate relief and arrange safe accommodation for displaced families.
He also pledged to continue working for the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction of areas affected by floods and landslides.
Pun called for greater public awareness, necessary precautions against possible natural disasters during the monsoon and effective preparedness for rescue and relief operations.
He thanked local governments, security agencies, elected representatives, volunteers and local residents involved in rescue, relief and assistance efforts during the disaster.
Earlier on Friday, Pun had submitted a four-point set of demands to Prime Minister Shah concerning the rescue, relief and rehabilitation of landslide victims.
Ten people were killed in a landslide in Thawang of Rolpa on Wednesday night, while three others died in a landslide in Sunachhari Rural Municipality on Thursday night.
