Deuba joins dissident NC faction’s national gathering

KATHMANDU: Former Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba has joined a national gathering organized by the party’s establishment-opposing faction.

Deuba, who is the chief guest of the gathering, arrived at the event venue on Friday.

He had returned to Nepal on Thursday after nearly five months abroad, where he had gone for medical treatment following injuries sustained during the protests on September 8 and 9, 2025.

Deuba became active in party politics immediately after returning to Nepal and is scheduled to address the national gathering.

The Deuba faction has continued to maintain its separate political activities within the Nepali Congress even after a change in party leadership.

Although Gagan Thapa was elected party president through a special General Convention held in late December last year, the Deuba faction has not recognized him as the party president.

Deuba’s activities since returning to Nepal have also reflected his faction’s position.

Immediately after returning on Thursday, Deuba stayed at his residence in Chundevi in the capacity of party president.

His participation as the chief guest at Friday’s gathering is expected to provide an indication of his position on the future political direction of the Nepali Congress.

Deuba’s renewed political activity suggests that the influence of the former establishment faction and the power struggle with the new leadership continue within the Nepali Congress despite the change in party leadership.
