Gorkha completes 58 percent of paddy plantation

GORKHA: Paddy plantation has gathered pace in Gorkha following the timely arrival of the monsoon, with 58 percent of the district’s targeted area already planted.

According to the Agricultural Development Office, paddy is expected to be cultivated on around 10,500 hectares of rain-fed farmland this year.

Information Officer Suman Bhattarai said the progress is significantly ahead of last year, when only 40 to 45 percent of transplantation had been completed by the same period. He expressed confidence that, if favorable weather continues, planting across most parts of the district will be completed within the next few days.

The office estimates that about 95 percent of the targeted area will ultimately be planted this season. Agricultural technicians also expect paddy production to increase this year due to timely and adequate rainfall.

The district’s major paddy-growing areas include Daraudi, Sirdiphant, Sheraphant, Jyadulphant, Tarifant, Darbungphant and Borlangphant. However, paddy cultivation is not feasible in the high-hill and mountainous areas of Chumanubri and Dharche rural municipalities in northern Gorkha because of the terrain and climatic conditions.
