Prachanda visits historic Chunbang site during Rukum East voter outreach

RUKUM EAST: Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, coordinator of the Nepali Communist Party, visited the historic Chunbang site in Bheri Danda this morning while campaigning for the upcoming House of Representatives election in Rukum East.

Chunbang, the former central committee meeting venue of the then Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), hosted a landmark meeting in 2005, where the party adopted the proposal for a democratic republic and opened the path for cooperation with parliamentary political parties. During that meeting, the party reduced its central committee from 95 to 35 members. The gathering is considered a historic milestone in Nepal’s political history.

During the visit, Prachanda observed the meeting site, the rooms where he and his wife Sita Dahal stayed, and the homes and rooms of his son Prakash Dahal and other leaders. When asked about his family’s contributions, he became emotional and briefly acknowledged their role in Nepal’s revolutionary movement.

Speaking during the voter outreach and site visit, Prachanda said the Chunbang meeting marked the transition of the people’s war toward a democratic republic and peace. He highlighted Rukum as a district that played a key role in initiating the revolution and establishing peace through the republican process.

Today, Prachanda is scheduled to conduct voter outreach in Gairigaun, Chunbang, and later visit Taksera in Putha North Rural Municipality to meet local voters.

Prachanda has been in Rukum East for the past three days for his campaign. Rukum East is the only hilly district in Lumbini Province.
