KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress special convention has annulled the decision of the party’s Central Committee to take disciplinary action against its office-bearers.
The closed session of the special convention at Bhrikutimandap on Wednesday overturned the decision to take action against General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, and Joint General Secretary Farmullah Mansoor, which would have stripped them of even their general party membership.
Addressing the closed session after the disciplinary decision, General Secretary Thapa said the Nepali Congress is not anyone’s private office that can expel its members at will.
He stated that even before the special convention began a few days ago, the Central Working Committee led by party president Sher Bahadur Deuba had already been dissolved, and that this had been formally informed to the Election Commission.
Thapa asserted that the party belongs to its members and that no one can claim personal ownership over it. Stressing that they are acting in accordance with the party statute, he urged leaders and cadres not to be unsettled by the disciplinary decision.
Similarly, General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma said that although the party leadership may take decisions against individuals, the responsibility of moving the party forward now lies with the special convention hall. He added that the working committee formed by the special convention would be taken to the Election Commission, and urged party members not to remain confused about the party’s status.
Likewise, Nepali Congress leader Farmullah Mansoor said that no one can obstruct the decisions of the special convention. He remarked that Gagan Thapa alone is now capable of leading both the party and the country.
