KATHMANDU: The government has clarified that it has no plans to review the two-day weekly public holiday.
Responding to questions from National Assembly members on matters related to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on behalf of Prime Minister Balendra Shah on Thursday, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam said there had been no decision or preparation to reconsider the two-day public holiday.
Gautam said the two-day holiday had helped make public administration more result-oriented while promoting economy in energy use, including electricity and vehicle fuel, as well as administrative expenditure.
She also claimed that the arrangement had improved work-life balance among employees and workers and had a positive impact on their morale, efficiency and productivity.
According to Gautam, the two-day holiday has also encouraged short-duration domestic trips, contributing to the promotion of domestic tourism and helping stimulate local economies and economic activities.
National Assembly member Bishnu Bahadur Bishwakarma had asked the government about the benefits and losses resulting from the introduction of a two-day weekly public holiday.
Gautam responded to the question at the National Assembly as opposition parties have been demanding that the government introduce a regular question-and-answer session with the prime minister in the House of Representatives.
