Two arrested for alleged online harassment, misuse of intimate content targeting women

KATHMANDU: Nepal Police’s Cyber Bureau has arrested two individuals, including an Indian national, on allegations of using social media to defame women, misuse intimate content and cause psychological distress.

Those arrested are 26-year-old Javarul Haq of Guwahati, Assam, India, and 24-year-old Saroj Karki of Champadevi Rural Municipality-6, Okhaldhunga, who is currently residing in Kathmandu.

According to Cyber Bureau spokesperson Superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar Giri, preliminary investigation found that Haq allegedly misused intimate videos and photographs of a woman and repeatedly pressured her for personal gain.

Police said that after his demands were not fulfilled, he allegedly uploaded the materials on TikTok in an attempt to damage the woman’s reputation.

Similarly, Karki was arrested following a complaint alleging that he posted intimate content from his former partner’s Facebook account after their relationship ended, causing harassment, reputational harm and mental distress.

The Kathmandu District Court has granted police permission to keep both suspects in custody for five days for further investigation under the Electronic Transactions Act.

Police have urged the public not to misuse social media to violate anyone’s privacy, reputation or dignity, warning that such activities are punishable under existing laws.
