Passport Department completes transfer of 10 million records to new system

KATHMANDU: The Department of Passports under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has successfully completed the transfer of nearly 10 million passport-related records to a new passport production and management system, marking the largest data migration project in Nepal’s history.

The department began providing services through the new system from Sunday after securely transferring the details of around 10 million Nepali citizens.

Officials said the implementation of such a large information technology system could lead to some initial technical challenges, including slower system performance and minor delays in passport delivery.

In a notice issued on Sunday, the department said its technical team, employees and experts from the system development company have been placed on 24-hour standby to monitor, test and improve the system continuously.

The department said it is fully prepared to address any short-term difficulties and ensure long-term stability of the new system.

As the system has entered its initial phase, the department has requested citizens to apply for passports only if the service is urgently required at present.

It said cooperation from service seekers would help make the new system more stable and efficient.

The department has also urged citizens not to rely on unverified information regarding passport services and to follow only official notices and updates issued through the department or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
