KATHMANDU: Active monsoon winds are expected to bring widespread rainfall across Nepal today, with the Weather Forecasting Division forecasting heavy to very heavy downpours in several provinces and urging the public to remain vigilant.
According to the Division, monsoon winds are currently active across Nepal, while the monsoon trough remains slightly north of its average position near the Terai.
At present, the weather is generally cloudy nationwide. Light to moderate rainfall is occurring in some areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali provinces, and at one or two places in Madhes and Sudurpaschim provinces.
This afternoon, Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces are expected to remain mostly cloudy, while Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces will experience generally cloudy conditions.
The Division has forecast moderate to heavy rain or snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning at many places in the mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, and at a few places in the mountainous areas of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.
Moderate to heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning is also likely at many places across the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Madhes provinces, as well as in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces. Similar weather is expected at some locations in the hilly and Terai areas of Karnali Province.
Heavy rainfall is likely at a few places in the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, and at one or two places in the Terai of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Madhes provinces.
Tonight, Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces will remain mostly cloudy, while Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces are expected to be generally cloudy.
Moderate to heavy rain or snowfall with thunder and lightning is forecast at many places in the mountainous areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces, some places in Gandaki Province, and a few places in the mountainous regions of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

The Division has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at a few places in the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Madhes provinces. Heavy rainfall is also expected at one or two places in Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, while isolated areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces could experience very heavy downpours.
The Division has urged the public to remain alert, warning that active monsoon conditions could trigger flash floods, inundation, landslides and soil erosion in vulnerable areas.
It also cautioned that the weather could disrupt daily life, agriculture, public health, tourism, mountaineering, and both road and air transportation.
