Oli undergoing gallbladder surgery today

KATHMANDU: Chair of the CPN-UML, KP Sharma Oli, is undergoing gallbladder surgery today.

Doctors involved in his treatment had earlier scheduled the operation for today. According to hospital sources, he has already been taken to the operation theatre as part of the planned procedure.

The surgery is being carried out by a medical team led by Dr. Paleswan Joshi Lakhey to remove gallstones from Oli’s gallbladder. Doctors have confirmed the presence of a 22 mm stone.

On March 28, a day after the formation of the new government, Oli was arrested on allegations related to the suppression of the Gen Z protests. Since the day of his arrest, he had been receiving treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.

Following his arrest, his wife Radhika Shakya filed a habeas corpus petition at the Supreme Court of Nepal, claiming that he had been kept in unlawful detention.

On April 6, the Supreme Court directed authorities to conclude the investigation against former prime minister Oli and former home minister Ramesh Lekhak by April 9.

The court had also ordered that if the investigation could not be completed by the deadline, they should be released under certain conditions. Following the order, police released Oli from custody and handed him over to the responsibility of his wife.

Although released from detention, Oli remained admitted to the hospital as he needed to undergo the scheduled surgery.
