KATHMANDU: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to take necessary measures to ensure the smooth supply and distribution of petroleum products, including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
In a press statement issued today, the commission’s under-secretary Shyam Babu Kafle called on the government to take legal action against anyone found involved in creating artificial shortages. The commission also asked authorities to regulate the unnecessary hoarding of petroleum products and ensure the immediate supply of essential goods to protect consumers’ rights.
The commission conducted monitoring visits to the Nepal Oil Corporation, Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection and Nepal Food Management Company Limited, as well as various gas depots.
“According to our monitoring and observations, Nepal largely depends on imports for petroleum products, and the raw materials required for supply are being imported regularly as before,” the statement said.
The commission noted that although some supply disruptions have occurred due to transportation management issues faced by certain gas companies, reports circulating in the media suggesting a widespread shortage of LPG have prompted consumers to stockpile more than necessary. It added that there were also indications that some traders may have created artificial shortages.
The commission further said it had taken note of media reports about an LPG shortage in the Kathmandu Valley, which has created concern among consumers, particularly in light of the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
