Nepal calls for unity among progressive forces to protect Constitution

PARSA: Nepali Communist Party (NCP) Co-coordinator Madhav Kumar Nepal has stressed the need for unity among progressive forces to protect the Constitution and safeguard the rights achieved through years of struggle and sacrifice.

Speaking at a press meeting in Birgunj on Saturday, Nepal said political forces must work together to protect fundamental rights, democracy, federalism and inclusion, while ensuring the full implementation of citizens’ constitutional rights.

“The Constitution did not come through an ordinary change. Political parties must unite, cooperate and coordinate to protect the Constitution,” Nepal said. He also stressed the need for collective efforts to provide good governance and effective public services.

The former prime minister said protecting the constitutional rights of indigenous women, Janajatis, Madhesis, Dalits, Muslims, persons with disabilities and people from marginalised regions was a shared responsibility.

Nepal said the government must respond to the growing expectations of the people and work according to their aspirations.

He also urged the government to intensify search and rescue efforts for those missing after the Bhotekoshi floods. “The country is facing a disaster. The Himalayan floods have caused significant loss of life and property. The government should mobilise available resources, organisations and political parties in search, rescue and relief efforts,” he said.

Nepal further called for an impartial investigation into the incidents that occurred during the Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9.
