Active monsoon raises flood, landslide and travel concerns



KATHMANDU: Active monsoon conditions are likely to bring rain to several parts of Nepal today, with the Weather Forecasting Division warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.

At present, the weather is generally cloudy in the mountainous and hilly regions of the country. Partial cloud cover is prevailing over the Terai areas of Madhesh and Koshi provinces, as well as the Terai regions of Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.

The Division said that light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is occurring in some places of Koshi, Bagmati and Karnali provinces.

For this afternoon, the Division has forecast generally cloudy conditions in Koshi and Madhesh provinces and in the mountainous and hilly areas of the country, while the Terai regions of Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces are expected to remain partly cloudy.

There is a possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning, and snowfall in higher elevations, in some mountainous and hilly areas. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also likely in some places of the Terai regions of Madhesh, Koshi and Bagmati provinces, and at one or two places in the Terai areas of Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Tonight, the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy across the country. Moderate to heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning, along with snowfall in higher elevations, is likely in some mountainous and hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as in some parts of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Similarly, moderate to heavy rainfall is possible in some places of the Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces, and at one or two places in Madhesh Province.

The Division has urged residents of vulnerable areas to remain alert, as heavy rainfall may increase the risk of flash floods, floods, landslides and soil erosion. Such conditions could affect daily life, agriculture, health services, tourism, mountaineering, and road and air transportation
