Ministers visit relocated landless families in Bhaktapur after Kirtipur flooding

KATHMANDU: A team of ministers visited landless families relocated to Kharipati in Bhaktapur after flooding inundated the Radhaswami Holding Centre in Sundarighat, Kirtipur.

The government has relocated 89 people from 31 families from the holding centre in Kirtipur Municipality-10 to Kharipati over the past two days. Some families have also been moved to Bode in Bhaktapur.

The relocation followed flooding at the holding centre, where the families had been staying after being displaced from settlements along the Bagmati River.

During Sunday’s visit, Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, Health Minister Nisha Mehta, Education Minister Sasmita Pokharel, Labour Minister Ramji Yadav, Minister for Women Sita Badi, and Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Pratibha Rawal met with the relocated families.

Addressing the residents, Minister Rawal said the government would provide land ownership certificates to eligible landless squatters through the legal process. She said issuing certificates hastily could create legal complications and stressed that the government was working to ensure a sustainable and legally sound solution.

Rawal also said the government was focused on a long-term resolution to the issue and expressed confidence that eligible families would receive land ownership certificates in due course.

The families had initially been removed from settlements along the Bagmati riverbanks during an eviction drive launched earlier this year and were temporarily housed at the Kirtipur holding centre before it was flooded.
