Flood warning issued for 23 districts, orange alert for Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: Authorities have placed Kathmandu Valley under an ‘orange flood alert’ and urged residents in 23 districts to remain vigilant as rising river levels increase the risk of flooding and flash floods on Sunday.

The Division has issued an orange alert for Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur and Kavrepalanchowk districts, indicating a high risk of flooding as river levels are expected to rise above the alert threshold.

According to the Division, water levels in small rivers and streams across Panchthar, Taplejung, Tehrathum, Dhankuta, Bhojpur, Solukhumbu, Sankhuwasabha, Khotang, Okhaldhunga, Udayapur, Sindhuli, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Dhading, Makawanpur, Rautahat and surrounding districts are likely to increase significantly, posing a moderate risk of flash floods.

The Division has advised people living in riverine areas of the affected districts to exercise caution and stay informed about weather and flood updates.

Under the Division’s flood warning system, green indicates river levels are below the alert threshold and the flood risk is low. Yellow signifies river levels are approaching the alert threshold, with a moderate risk of flooding.

Orange indicates river levels have exceeded the alert threshold, posing a high flood risk, while red means water levels have crossed the danger mark, signalling a severe flood threat.
