Landslide blocks Beni–Jomsom road at Mahabhir

MYAGDI: The Beni–Jomsom–Korala road, a key route linking Mustang with the national highway network, has been obstructed since this morning after a landslide struck the Mahabhir area in Annapurna Rural Municipality-7.

The landslide, carrying rocks and mud, has completely blocked the 76-kilometre Beni–Jomsom road section, halting traffic movement in both directions. Vehicles travelling from Beni toward Mustang and from Jomsom toward Beni have been stranded midway due to the obstruction.

The road closure has affected local residents as well as domestic and foreign tourists and pilgrims travelling to Mustang and Muktinath.

According to Sagar Timilsina, Information Officer at the District Police Office, efforts are underway to reopen the road with the help of equipment deployed by the Department of Roads.

Authorities said landslides frequently occur from a cliff located around 500 metres above the roadway in the Mahabhir section. Even moderate rainfall often triggers debris falls in the area, regularly disrupting traffic and increasing the risk of accidents.
