PM Balen Shah, Speaker Aryal discuss ways to end parliamentary obstruction

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balen Shah and Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss ways to facilitate the smooth functioning of Parliament.

Speaker Aryal reached the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers to meet Prime Minister Shah.

According to the Parliament Secretariat, the two discussed measures to make the ongoing monsoon session more effective, provide necessary business to the House and end the continued obstruction by opposition parties.

Opposition parties have been continuously obstructing Parliament following remarks made by Prime Minister Shah in Parliament on May 31, when he said Nepal had also encroached on Indian territory.

The opposition parties have accused Shah of failing to remain accountable to Parliament and making irresponsible remarks on a sensitive issue.

They have also been demanding that the Prime Minister appear before Parliament and clarify his remarks.

Opposition parties have questioned Speaker Aryal’s role as well, arguing that the Speaker also has a responsibility to ensure that the Prime Minister remains accountable to the House.
