Five arrested for allegedly defrauding job seekers with fake overseas employment offers



KATHMANDU: Police have arrested five people on charges of defrauding job seekers by promising lucrative overseas employment opportunities in various countries.

According to the Central Police News Room, those arrested are Kunsang Lama, 36, of Sindhuli; Dhan Bahadur Shahi, 42, of Bardiya; Umesh Limbu of Taplejung; Sachita Pariyar, 21, of Tanahun; and Niroj Rai, 41, of Khotang.

Police said Lama allegedly collected Rs 207,000 from a victim by promising employment in the United Arab Emirates. Shahi is accused of taking Rs 295,000 from another victim with the promise of sending them to Georgia.

Similarly, Limbu allegedly defrauded a victim of Rs 500,000 by promising a job in Belarus, while Pariyar is accused of taking Rs 150,000 for employment in Romania. Rai allegedly collected Rs 790,000 from two victims after promising jobs in Türkiye before losing contact with them.

Based on complaints filed by the victims, a team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office arrested Lama from Budhanilkantha Municipality-2, Shahi from Tarakeshwar Municipality-8, Limbu from Tokha Municipality-5, Pariyar from Kathmandu Metropolitan City-3 and Rai from Kathmandu Metropolitan City-4.

Lama and Shahi were arrested on Thursday, while Limbu, Pariyar and Rai were taken into custody on Friday.

Police said the suspects have been handed over to the Department of Foreign Employment in Tahachal for further investigation and legal action.
