MIAMI: England will take on Norway in a FIFA World Cup quarter-final on Friday in a blockbuster clash featuring star strikers Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.
The winner will advance to the semi-finals to face either defending champions Argentina or surprise contenders Switzerland.
England reached the last eight after a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Mexico in the round of 16 despite finishing the match with 10 men. Captain Harry Kane has been instrumental in England’s campaign, scoring six goals in the tournament.
Norway, meanwhile, have enjoyed a historic run, eliminating Brazil en route to the quarter-finals. Erling Haaland has led the charge with seven goals, helping Norway reach the furthest stage in their World Cup history.
Norway coach Stale Solbakken described the quarter-final as another landmark moment for his country’s football, while Kane praised Haaland’s quality but said the pair have different playing styles.
England received a boost ahead of the match with Declan Rice, Marc Guehi and Reece James returning to training after recovering from illness and injury. Coach Thomas Tuchel said their return was “the best news” as England look to book a place in the semi-finals.
The match at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami is expected to be played in sweltering conditions, with temperatures forecast to exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
In the other quarter-final, Argentina will face Switzerland in Kansas City as Lionel Messi’s side continue their bid to retain the World Cup title.
Although Argentina progressed comfortably through the group stage, they were tested in the knockout rounds by Cape Verde and Egypt. Messi, who turned 39 during the tournament, has continued to inspire the defending champions and will look to add to his World Cup record tally of 21 goals.
Switzerland, led by captain Granit Xhaka, will hope their disciplined defensive approach can upset the South American giants. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni acknowledged Switzerland’s experience and strength, describing them as a difficult opponent.
Earlier on Friday, Spain secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Belgium to book a semi-final showdown with France. Mikel Merino scored the winner in the 88th minute after Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens failed to hold onto a shot.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente described the upcoming clash with France as “a final before the final” given the quality of both sides.
