SC issues second setback to Balen Shah-led government over union ban

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has delivered another setback to the government led by Balen Shah by issuing an interim order against the decision to ban trade unions affiliated with political parties.

On Monday, the Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court halted the government’s decision to prohibit trade unions associated with political parties within the civil service sector.

The order came on the same day the apex court also issued a short-term interim order against the government’s decision to ban student organisations.

The court’s latest ruling has temporarily suspended the implementation of the government’s move, which had faced criticism from various political and labour groups.

The government had argued that politically affiliated unions within the civil service should be restricted, but petitioners claimed the decision violated constitutional rights related to association and organisation.

The Supreme Court has now ordered the government and concerned authorities to clarify the legal basis behind the decision while further hearings continue.
