Padma Aryal slams govt over ordinances, calls it move toward ‘controlled authoritarianism’

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML lawmaker Padma Aryal has strongly criticized the government in the House of Representatives, accusing it of bypassing parliament through ordinances and pushing the country towards “controlled authoritarianism.”

Speaking during Monday’s House meeting, MP Aryal condemned what she described as an attempt to impose executive dominance by sidelining the legislature.

“Those who once opposed ordinances are now bringing them themselves. What kind of shameless thinking is this? Bypassing parliament to impose executive arbitrariness is being called a new vision,” she said.

She further alleged that recent decisions, including the process of recommending the Chief Justice, have undermined established constitutional norms.

“This chain of ordinances will not stop here. The government is moving not towards democracy but towards controlled authoritarianism,” Aryal said.

Emphasising the importance of the rule of law, she warned that abuse of power is temporary but constitutional governance must endure. She also demanded the immediate withdrawal of all ordinances.

“The arrogance of power may be temporary, but the rule of law must last. All ordinances should be withdrawn immediately,” she said in the House.

Aryal also condemned the recent demolition of squatter settlements using bulldozers, echoing concerns raised by other opposition lawmakers.

Earlier in the session, Nepali Congress MP Nishkal Rai had also strongly criticized the government. Opposition lawmakers continued to voice sharp criticism of the administration during Monday’s meeting.
