Over 95 percent of free hospital beds remain vacant

Only 135 of 3,264 free hospital beds occupied nationwide, 3,129 still available

KATHMANDU: Government and private hospitals across Nepal have allocated 3,264 beds for free treatment in line with the government’s decision requiring hospitals to reserve 10 percent of their total beds for poor, helpless, and abandoned patients.

According to details published through the online system operated under the Ministry of Health and Population, a total of 3,264 beds have been designated for free treatment out of 18,424 beds available nationwide.

Among them, 135 free beds are currently occupied, while 3,129 beds remain available.

Article 35 of the Constitution of Nepal 2015 guarantees every citizen the right to free basic healthcare services from the state.

In line with the constitutional provision, the government has made it mandatory for private hospitals to reserve 10 percent of their beds for economically disadvantaged, helpless, and targeted groups to ensure access to treatment.

The government said it has also developed an online monitoring system to make the arrangement more effective, accessible, and transparent.

Through the system, the public can access information regarding the availability of free beds by province, district, and hospital.
