KATHMANDU: The government has assured that Nepali citizens wishing to return home due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia will be rescued under any circumstances.
Speaking at a press conference held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Nepali migrant workers in West Asian countries would be rescued if they face difficulties due to the escalating situation.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Balananda Sharma said Nepali workers currently in West Asian countries are not in immediate danger. However, he emphasized that the government is prepared to carry out rescue operations if the situation worsens.
“If the need arises to evacuate hundreds of thousands of Nepalis at once, the government will arrange the necessary infrastructure accordingly,” Sharma said.
The minister noted that those facing greater difficulties are not migrant workers but Nepalis stranded in transit due to disruptions caused by the regional conflict. He added that accommodation and food arrangements for those stranded in transit have been managed by Nepali diplomatic missions and the concerned airlines.
Meanwhile, Ramkaji Khadka, chief of the Middle Asia, West Asia and Africa Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, informed that 15 Nepali citizens have been injured so far due to the conflict in West Asia, while one Nepali national has died.
Khadka said the body of the deceased has already been brought back to Nepal and handed over to the family, and the process of compensation is underway.
He further stated that Nepali diplomatic missions are working to establish contact with citizens affected by the conflict. According to him, a total of 63,570 Nepalis have registered their details through the Consular Department’s online system so far, and efforts are ongoing to reach those who may be in unsafe situations through diplomatic missions.
