KATHMANDU: Rights activists and youths staged a protest in Kathmandu on Wednesday, warning authorities over what they say is a growing number of violent incidents against the Dalit community.
The demonstrators gathered at Maitighar Mandala, demanding justice for victims and stronger action against violence, rape, and killings targeting Dalits across the country.
Participants also lit candles to pray for the peace of the souls of those who have lost their lives in such incidents.
During the protest, demonstrators displayed placards carrying messages such as “End violence against women,” “Punish rapists strictly,” “The government has changed, society has not,” and “Unite against the exploitation of women.”
The protesters stressed that members of the Dalit community have now been elected to parliament following the recent elections, and urged them to raise and address Dalit issues more actively.
They also called on leaders who had previously taken part in street protests alongside them to work seriously from within parliament and the government to advance Dalit rights and ensure justice for victims.
