RSP lawmaker Amresh Singh says government is being run like a dictatorship

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Amresh Kumar Singh has criticised the government, saying it is being run from outside Singha Durbar in an authoritarian and gangster-like manner.

Speaking during Thursday’s House of Representatives meeting, Singh alleged that although the parliamentary system requires the government to operate under the authority of the prime minister, the current administration has instead been transformed into a system driven by advisers and the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

Questioning the backgrounds of the prime minister’s advisers, Singh said the government was being operated from outside Singha Durbar in an authoritarian and gangster-like style. He claimed that even a single adviser could be enough to bring about the government’s downfall.

Singh also accused the government of undermining the spirit of the Constitution.

He warned that the current government, which he said had come to power with the support of the Madhesi community, could collapse like a house of cards if it sidelines the very community on whose support it depends.

Singh strongly objected to the Home Minister’s alleged threats against journalists and media workers, who he described as the fourth pillar of the state. He said wrongdoing should be investigated and punished, but the government should not resort to threats and intimidation.

He stressed that the government must remain fully accountable to Parliament and that lawmakers should continue to act as watchdogs on behalf of the people.
