KATHMANDU: As the government struggles to resolve the ongoing gas shortage, students have taken their cooking pots to the streets—turning a campus gate into a makeshift kitchen.
In a symbolic protest on Thursday, students affiliated with ANNFSU (Revolutionary), a student organization of the Nepali Communist Party (NCP), cooked rice and gundruk-potato (fermented leafy greens and potatoes) curry over firewood at the gate of Ratna Rajya Laxmi (RR) Campus in Kathmandu. They then sat together at the gate and ate the food they had prepared.
The protest was aimed at drawing attention to the impact of the gas shortage on everyday life. With cooking gas increasingly difficult to find, some students say their studies have been disrupted as they spend hours standing in queues to buy gas. Others have stopped cooking in their dormitories altogether, while some say they are being forced to survive on noodles and biscuits.
For the students, Thursday’s firewood cooking session was more than a meal—it was a symbolic reminder that, in the absence of cooking gas, even a campus gate can become a kitchen.
