BHOJPUR: With the arrival of spring, the forests of the eastern hill region have come alive, with blooming rhododendrons (gurans) adding to the natural beauty of the famous Mundum trek area in Bhojpur.
The forests along the trail are currently covered with various species of rhododendrons . The vibrant mix of red, pink, and white flowers has created a scenic landscape that is delighting trekkers. The combination of blooming rhododendrons with dense green forests has further enhanced the area’s visual appeal.
The Mundum Trek is regarded not only for its natural beauty but also for its cultural and religious significance. Connected to the traditions, customs, and “Mundum” (religious scripture) of the Kirant community, the region reflects the lifestyle and heritage of Kirant civilization.
Chief Administrative Officer of the rural municipality, Adit Dahal, said that travellers along the trail can closely experience the culture, language, traditional attire, and way of life of the local community. He added that tourist arrivals on the Mundum trail have been increasing in recent times.
Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality Chairperson Saroj Basnet said that domestic tourist arrivals have risen significantly, as spring is the most favourable season for trekking.
“The beauty of the Mundum Trail has further increased with flowers such as rhododendrons,” said Chairperson Basnet. “We have also organized a traditional food festival targeting tourists.”
Nature lovers, photographers, and adventure enthusiasts are increasingly drawn to the Mundum Trail during the rhododendron blooming season.
Tourist destinations such as Temkedanda, Salpa Pokhari, Silichung, and Maiyungdanda along the route have become more attractive. The mountain views from Temkedanda and Maiyungdanda, the religious importance of Salpa Pokhari, and the peaceful environment of Silichung offer a unique experience for visitors.
According to local hotel and homestay entrepreneur Bibek Kulung, tourist arrivals have started increasing with the onset of the rhododendron flowering season. Accommodation, food, and guiding services are being expanded in response to growing demand.
Infrastructure improvements have also been made along the trekking route, including trail marking, construction of rest areas, and installation of information boards, making travel more convenient for visitors.
Vice-Chairperson of the rural municipality, Ramadevi Rai, said that local, provincial, and federal governments, along with tourism-related projects, are jointly working to promote the area.
With its unique blend of natural beauty, biodiversity, cultural heritage, and adventure tourism, the Mundum Trek region is emerging as a more attractive destination. Locals say the experience of visiting the area in spring leaves a lasting impression on travellers.
