Bhandari advises Thapa to fulfil responsibility instead of resigning

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Chandra Bhandari has suggested that party President Gagan Kumar Thapa focus on fulfilling his responsibilities rather than considering resignation.

Bhandari made the remark after reports surfaced that Thapa was contemplating stepping down following the defeat of all Nepali Congress office-bearers in the March 5 election.

In a Facebook post, Bhandari wrote that the time now calls for responsibility, not resignation.

“This is not the time to resign but to fulfil responsibilities,” he said.

Bhandari also argued that the party election held in January was not a regular convention-based process. Therefore, he said, it would be more appropriate, responsible, and timely for Thapa to move toward an early party convention instead of resigning in the name of moral accountability.

He further stressed that saving the Nepali Congress at this moment is itself a moral duty.

“Today’s bitter reality is that youths are gradually drifting away from the Nepali Congress,” Bhandari wrote. “At such a time, the party needs treatment rather than abandonment.”

He added that ethics in Nepali politics has largely deteriorated and emphasized the need for new thinking, new leadership, and fresh initiatives.

“True leadership is not about fleeing when problems arise, but about addressing them and protecting the organization,” he said.
