KATHMANDU: The government and political parties have been advised to deliver on the aspirations of the Gen Z movement held on September 8-9 last year.
Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives today, they said the movement was not merely aimed at changing the government. Rather, it was launched to establish the rule of law and promote good governance, they asserted.
Purushottam Shuprabhat Yadav of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) urged the government to perform in accordance with the demands and spirit of Gen Z movement.
He expressed his concern over the ‘arrests’ of Gen Z demonstrators, calling on the government to correct the move.
Arjun Narsingh KC of the Nepali Congress voiced that the movement was aimed at bringing change in the governance system by promoting good governance and rule of law. He stressed that its spirit must be embraced by all and reflected in their actions.
Calling for collective efforts to cope with post-disaster situation, he urged the government to pay special heed to restore road connectivity in Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Dhading.
Basna Thapa from the same party urged the government to address pain and sufferings of disaster-affected families, including of those thousands who have remained unaccounted for since the floods on August 26.
Krantisheekha Dhital of Rastriya Swatantra Party expressed her concern over an increased risk of outbreaks of various diseases in flood-affected areas. Security challenges have increased for women and children in holding centres, she said.
Ganesh Singh Thaugunna of CPN (UML) apprised the House that incessant rains had affected lives in Darchula and other areas, urging the government to establish an effective disaster early-warning system and prioritise the construction of an embankment along the Mahakali River.
Parbati BK of Nepali Communist Party (NCP) advised the government to assess how effectively it could implement the resolutions for changes adopted by the Gen Z movement.
Sita Thapaliya of Nepali Congress called for the construction of Bailey bridges in the affected areas and the restoration of road connectivity.
Khadga Bahadur Shahi of the Nepali Congress briefed the House on inconveniences people are facing due to flooding caused by the Ghattekhola (stream) in Chhayanath Rara municipality in Mugu.
Dr Arjun Kumar Karki of CPN (UML) urged the government to assess the status of potentially vulnerable glacier lakes and raise people awareness about the risks they pose.
Yagyamani Neupane of Rastriya Swatantra Party said Nepal is bearing the brunt of climate change due to the failure on the part of developed nations to comply with relevant international laws and treaties. He also demanded an end to the situation that forces people participated in the Gen Z movement to visit prisons and courts. (RSS)
