KATHMANDU: More than 261,000 motorists have failed to pay outstanding traffic fines, prompting authorities to restrict their access to services provided by transport offices.
According to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, motorists with unpaid fines will be unable to register newly purchased vehicles, transfer vehicle ownership, renew their driving licences or obtain other services from transport management offices.
Traffic police said the process of suspending services has already begun based on records submitted to the Department of Transport Management after the fines remained unpaid for an extended period.
Superintendent of Police Naresh Raj Subedi said the restrictions will remain in place until the outstanding fines are fully paid into the state treasury.
Under the new arrangement, transport offices will verify whether applicants have cleared all traffic fines before providing any service. Authorities have also started sending SMS notifications to motorists with pending payments.
Traffic police said the measure aims to improve the collection of traffic fines, encourage compliance with traffic regulations and strengthen road discipline.
Officials expressed confidence that the policy would discourage motorists from ignoring traffic penalties and urged all drivers to comply with traffic rules and settle outstanding fines promptly.
