Parliamentary Hearing Committee begins vetting process for Election Commission nominees

KATHMANDU: The Parliamentary Hearing Committee has formally begun the hearing process for nominees recommended for the posts of Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.

A meeting of the committee held at Singha Durbar on Thursday initiated the vetting process for proposed Chief Election Commissioner Man Bahadur Karki and Election Commissioner nominees Rajiv Subba and Guru Prasad Wagle.

Committee Chair Bodh Narayan Shrestha said the committee has invited public complaints and feedback, allowing 10 days for submissions against the nominees. Complaints may be filed electronically or through other means, provided they are supported by clear grounds.

He said the complaints received will be opened and distributed to committee members for review at the committee’s meeting scheduled for July 21.

During the meeting, opposition lawmakers urged the committee to ensure the hearing process is conducted thoroughly rather than in haste. Committee member Padma Aryal said holding all hearings in a single day would undermine their effectiveness and stressed the need to follow due process.

Similarly, committee member Barshaman Pun called for the hearings to be conducted in line with established parliamentary practice.

Responding to the concerns, Chair Shrestha assured lawmakers that the committee would carry out the hearings through a proper and comprehensive process.

The Constitutional Council had recommended the three nominees to fill vacant positions in the Election Commission during its meeting on July 3.
