KANCHANPUR: The Khayarkandra community homestays in Shuklaphanta Municipality-3, established to promote eco-friendly tourism and generate income for rural communities, have recently benefited from solar energy.
A solar power backup system has been installed at the homestays to ensure uninterrupted services.
Eight homestays are currently operating with joint support from Shuklaphanta Municipality, the Connect Project, and Himali Prakriti. The backup system installed in the homestay households is expected to improve convenience for both operators and visitors.
The installation of the system cost Rs 759,000.
Technical supervisor at Himali Prakriti, Puran Singh Dhagunna, said the new facility would not only promote renewable energy but also improve homestay operations and help increase income. “Importantly, the scheme supports rural eco-friendly tourism,” he added.
Khusiram Chaudhary, one of the homestay operators, said that power cuts are no longer a problem after the installation of the solar backup system. “Earlier, visitors were inconvenienced due to load shedding. Now we can provide electricity for lighting, fans, mobile charging, and other essential services round the clock,” he said, adding that it has improved tourists’ experience.
Another operator, Tikuram Dagaura, said service delivery has become more reliable after the installation of the system.
Deputy Mayor of Shuklaphanta Municipality, Kalpana Panta, said solar energy not only improves homestay services but also helps reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment. “It supports the concept of sustainable tourism,” she added.
Located near Shuklaphanta National Park, the homestays attract visitors interested in local culture, tourism, and natural beauty. Tourists are offered Tharu cuisine and cultural performances, including traditional dances and songs. Both domestic and international visitors stay at these rural homestays.
