Survey shows rising tobacco use among Nepali youth and adults

KATHMANDU: A recent national survey has highlighted a worrying trend in tobacco consumption across Nepal. According to the Nepal Multidimensional Indicator Survey, 41.8 percent of men and 5.1 percent of women aged 15 to 49 reported using some form of tobacco in the month preceding the survey.

The survey also found that 7.6 percent of males and 2.1 percent of females began consuming tobacco before the age of 15, indicating an increasing tendency for addiction during adolescence.

Health experts warn that early initiation of tobacco use can lead to long-term health risks, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory problems, and mental health issues.

Despite the government enacting laws and policies to control tobacco consumption, weak enforcement has allowed easy access for adolescents and young adults, according to stakeholders.
