UML to hold local-level conventions in December

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML party has set dates for conventions of its ward and local-level committees.

A first meeting of the party’s Standing Committee held at the party central office in Chyasal on Thursday under the chairmanship of party chair KP Sharma Oli decided to hold ward committee conventions on December 12 and local-level committee conventions on December 19.

At the beginning of the meeting, Bidya Devi Bhandari, who was nominated as the party’s senior leader by the third Central Committee meeting, took the oath of office and secrecy.

According to UML Publicity Department Chief Niraj Acharya, the meeting also decided to organise a national gathering in the first week of December. The gathering will be attended by office-bearers of provincial and district committees, chairpersons and vice chairpersons of local-level committees, and elected representatives from various levels.

The meeting also decided to organise a provincial-level gathering after the completion of the ward and local-level conventions, Acharya said.

Likewise, following the death of Jainab Khatun, who represented Rautahat under the proportional representation system in the Madhes Provincial Assembly, the meeting decided to nominate Nazma Khatun, a candidate from the proportional representation list, to fill the vacant position and write to the Election Commission accordingly.

The meeting also decided to fill vacant district chairperson positions in 13 districts through decisions at the respective district level. Decisions made at the district level will be converted into decisions of the concerned organisational committees and sent to the higher committee for approval, Acharya said.

The UML Standing Committee will meet again on Friday.
