Speaker orders removal of UML lawmaker Rai’s remarks from parliamentary record

KATHMANDU: Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal has directed the removal of CPN-UML lawmaker Rajendra Kumar Rai’s remarks from the official parliamentary record.

During Wednesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Rai had made a statement questioning the Speaker, saying, “Speaker, can you hear or not?” The remark triggered a dispute, leading to a temporary suspension of the House meeting.

After the meeting resumed, Speaker Aryal instructed the Parliament Secretariat to remove all words used by Rai during his speech from the parliamentary records.

Speaking after the controversy, Rai acknowledged that statements made in moments of emotion can sometimes create problems and said he respected parliamentary procedures and practices.

He said the opposition had been raising concerns for a long time but the government had failed to take them seriously.

Rai also warned that protests would continue if the demands raised by opposition parties continued to be ignored, urging the government to move forward through dialogue and consensus.
