KATHMANDU: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case at the Special Court in Kathmandu against Birgunj Metropolitan City Mayor Rajeshman Singh and six other individuals on Monday.
According to the CIAA, the case relates to allegations of issuing a birth registration certificate and citizenship document based on false details by falsely claiming another person’s daughter as his own in Birgunj Metropolitan City-3.
The anti-graft body has named several officials in the charge sheet, including then Ward Secretary Bhikhari Rai, then Ward Member and Acting Ward Chair Tufail Akhtar Thakurai, and then Administrative Officer at the District Administration Office Parsa Shad Kumar Pokhrel.
Officials from the Home Ministry’s investigation committee, including former coordinator Pushkar Rana and member Parshuram Pokharel, have also been charged for allegedly preparing a misleading report and concealing irregularities.
The CIAA stated that false documents were prepared and procedural irregularities were committed during the issuance of birth registration and citizenship certificates, while parts of the investigation process were allegedly manipulated to cover up the misconduct.
Among the accused, Mayor Singh and Rita Bhattarai of Indrawati Rural Municipality-10, Sindhupalchok, have also been named as accomplices and are being sought punishment equivalent to principal offenders.
The commission has sought punishment under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act including imprisonment and fines for all defendants.
The case will now proceed for hearing at the Special Court.
