KATHMANDU: Resham Lal Chaudhary, chief patron of the Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal, has been barred from contesting the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21.
The Supreme Court on Sunday dismissed a writ petition filed against the Election Commission’s decision to cancel Chaudhary’s candidacy, thereby upholding the commission’s ruling.
A bench of Justices Sharanga Subedi and Tek Prasad Dhungana endorsed the Election Commission’s decision not to allow Chaudhary to run in the election.
Chaudhary had filed the writ petition on Magh 9, seeking to overturn the decision of the election officer to cancel his candidacy for the House of Representatives from Kailali constituency No. 1.
Although the petition was under consideration at the Supreme Court, Chaudhary had continued his door-to-door election campaign.
The Election Commission had annulled his candidacy citing complaints related to the Tikapur incident, in which eight people were killed. Chaudhary had been sentenced to life imprisonment in the case but was later granted a presidential pardon.
However, the commission maintained that despite the pardon, records of the crime and sentence remain valid, leading to the cancellation of his nomination.
