Angdembe warns algorithm-driven popularity could push Nepal toward a Ukraine-like situation

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Bhishma Raj Angdembe has said the party must not split, break apart or become divided over ideology at a time when the country is facing difficult circumstances.

Addressing the closed session of the Nepali Congress General Convention on Wednesday, Angdembe said it was uncertain when forces driven by algorithms and cheap popularity could push the country into a disaster or a situation like Ukraine.

He said the Nepali Congress should not split, break apart or become ideologically divided under such circumstances.

Angdembe said the party should move forward by embracing the trust shown by General Convention representatives, ranging from young representatives to senior citizens over the age of 80.

He said merely changing the party’s leadership or faces would not ensure its sustainable development. If changes were made in its policies, principles, institutional system and organisational activity, the Nepali Congress could continue to provide direction to the country for generations, he said.

Angdembe said the Nepali Congress should not be reduced to merely a means of forming governments and gaining power, but should be developed into a strong party capable of implementing ideas for the country’s prosperity, progress and transformation.

Supporting efforts to keep the party united and intact, Angdembe said he had not filed his candidacy for any post.

He said that even without holding a party position, he would continue to stand as a strong and vocal voice for the Nepali Congress in Parliament and on the streets.
