KATHMANDU: The government has accelerated efforts to repair major roads blocked by floods and landslides and reopen them before the Dashain festival.
Department of Roads spokesperson Shubharaj Neupane said work to repair highways and roads damaged by recent natural disasters was progressing rapidly, with the aim of restoring traffic on all major routes before Dashain.
“Road repair work has also been expedited in flood-affected districts, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan and Gorkha,” Neupane said. “Transportation up to Dhunche in Rasuwa will resume within the next four to five days, while the road to Mustang will also be reopened soon.”
He said some inconvenience for travellers could remain, but there would be no situation in which people would be unable to return home from Kathmandu Valley or the transportation of food and other essential goods would be completely disrupted because of road blockages.
According to the latest details released by Nepal Police, major highways in Rasuwa district of Bagmati Province have remained blocked since August 26 following the Bhotekoshi flood.
Similarly, the Beni-Jomsom road section at Baisari in Raghuganga Rural Municipality-2, Myagdi, has been completely blocked due to a landslide.
The Kaligandaki Corridor at Janti in Baudikali Rural Municipality-3, Nawalparasi (East), which was also affected by a landslide on Asoj 2, has now been opened for one-way traffic. However, police said large vehicles are still prohibited from using the road.
Likewise, the Besisahar-Khangsar road section in Manang has also resumed one-way traffic. Police said necessary coordination and repair work are underway to fully reopen the remaining blocked roads as soon as possible.
